In the name of God, the Almighty,¹ the Merciful.

¹ ṣād¹ By the Qur’an² full of remembrance!³

² The truth is,¹ those who ignore warning² are in pride³ and dissension.

³ (How many a generation We destroyed before them! And they cried out when there was no time to escape.)

⁴ And they marvel that a warner has come to them from among them; and the false claimers of guidance¹ say: “This is a sorcerer² and a liar.

⁵ “Has he made the gods One God?¹ This is an amazing thing.”

⁶ And the eminent ones among them went forth: “Go and be steadfast to your gods — this is a thing desired.¹

⁷ “We heard not of this in the latter creed;¹ this is only a fabrication.

⁸ “Is it that the remembrance¹ was sent down upon him from among us?” The truth is,² they are in doubt about My remembrance;³ the truth is,⁴ they have not tasted My punishment!

⁹ If¹ they have the treasuries of the mercy of thy Lord, the Exalted in Might, the Bestower:² —

¹⁰ Or if¹ they have the dominion of the heavens and the earth and what is between them:² — then let them ascend into the causes!³

¹¹ Some force is thereupon¹ defeated among the parties.²

¹² The people of Noah denied before them, and ʿĀd, and Pharaoh,¹ the Lord of Stakes,

¹³ And Thamūd, and the people of Lot, and the companions of the woods¹ — those were the parties —

¹⁴ Each only denied the messengers, so My retribution became binding.¹

¹⁵ And these¹ look only for one Blast; it has no delay.

¹⁶ And they say: “Our Lord: hasten Thou for us our lot before the Day of Reckoning!”¹

¹⁷ Be thou patient over what they say. And remember thou Our servant David, the possessor of strength: he was one turning in repentance.¹

¹⁸ We made subject the mountains with him giving glory¹ at evening and sunrise,

¹⁹ And the birds assembled, all turning in repentance to Him.

²⁰ And We strengthened his dominion, and gave him wisdom¹ and discernment of speech.

²¹ And has the report of the litigant come to thee: — when they scaled the wall of the chamber?

²² When they entered upon David, and he was in terror of them, they said: “Fear thou not — two litigants, one of whom has oppressed the other. So judge thou between us with justice,¹ and transgress thou not; and guide thou us to the right way.

²³ “This, my brother, has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe; so he said: ‘Place thou her in my charge’; and he overcame me in speech.”

²⁴ Said he: “He has wronged thee in asking thy ewe for his ewes; and many among acquaintances oppress one another save those who heed warning¹ and do righteous deeds — and few are they.” And David understood that We had but subjected him to means of denial;² and he asked forgiveness of his Lord, and fell down humbly³ and repented.

²⁵ So We forgave him that; and he has nearness to Us and a good journey’s end.¹

²⁶ “O David: We have appointed thee a successor in the earth; so judge thou between men with justice;¹ and follow thou not vain desire lest it cause thee to stray from the path of God.” Those who stray from the path of God will have a severe punishment because they forgot the Day of Reckoning.

²⁷ And We created not the heaven and the earth and what is between them¹ to no purpose. That is the assumption of those who ignore warning.² And woe to those who ignore warning³ from the Fire!

²⁸ If¹ We make those who heed warning² and do righteous deeds like the workers of corruption in the land:[...].³ — Or if⁴ We make those of prudent fear⁵ like the licentious:[...].⁶

²⁹ A Writ¹ We have sent down to thee,² one blessed, that they might consider its proofs³ with care, and that those of insight might take heed.

³⁰ And We gave David Solomon — how excellent a servant! He was one turning in repentance.

³¹ When there were presented to him in the evening standing steeds,¹

³² He said: “I have loved the love of good out of¹ remembrance² of my Lord!” — until it³ disappeared behind the partition: —

³³ “Return them to me!” Then he began to rub down¹ their legs and necks.

³⁴ And We subjected Solomon to means of denial,¹ and cast upon his throne a body;² then did he repent.

³⁵ He said: “My Lord: forgive Thou me, and give Thou me a dominion such as behoves no one after me;¹ Thou art the Bestower!”

³⁶ So We made subject to him the wind — running by his command gently¹ whithersoever he directed —

³⁷ And the satans,¹ every builder and diver,

³⁸ And others bound together in shackles.

³⁹ “This is Our gift; so grant thou or withhold thou without reckoning!”¹

⁴⁰ And he has nearness to Us, and a good journey’s end.¹

⁴¹ And remember thou Our servant Job,¹ when he called to his Lord: “The satan² has touched me with distress and punishment.”

⁴² “Stamp thou thy foot:¹ — this is a cool bath and drink!”

⁴³ And We gave him his household, and their like with them, as a mercy from Us, and as a reminder for men of understanding.

⁴⁴ And: “Take thou in thy hand a bouquet, and strike¹ thou therewith, and break thou not thine oath!”² We found him patient. How excellent a servant! He was one turning in repentance.

⁴⁵ And remember thou Our servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob — possessors of strength and vision.

⁴⁶ We purified them with a pure quality: the remembrance of the Abode.

⁴⁷ And they are in Our sight among the chosen, the excellent.

⁴⁸ And remember thou Ishmael, and Elisha,¹ and Dhūl-Kifl;² and all were among the excellent.

⁴⁹ This is a remembrance.¹ And for those of prudent fear² is a good journey’s end:³

⁵⁰ Gardens of perpetual abode¹ whose doors will be opened to them;

⁵¹ Reclining therein, they will call therein for plenteous fruit and drink;

⁵² And with them maidens of modest gaze,¹ well-matched.²

⁵³ This is what you are promised for the Day of Reckoning.

⁵⁴ This is Our provision; it has no depletion.

⁵⁵ This!¹ And for those transgressing all bounds² is an evil journey’s end:³

⁵⁶ Gehenna, wherein they will burn; and evil is the resting-place.

⁵⁷ This! So let them taste it: scalding water and purulence,¹

⁵⁸ And more¹ of like categories.²

⁵⁹ “This is a crowd rushing headlong with you!” — No welcome for them — they will burn in the Fire.

⁶⁰ They will say: “The truth is,¹ you — no welcome for you — you sent it ahead for us;² and evil is the fixed lodging!”

⁶¹ They will say: “Our Lord: whoso sent this ahead for us, increase Thou for him a double punishment in the Fire.”

⁶² And they will say: “What ails us that we see not men we counted among the worst,

⁶³ “Whom we took in derision — or does our¹ sight miss them?”

⁶⁴ That is true:¹ — the mutual recrimination of the people of the Fire.

⁶⁵ Say thou: “I am only a warner; and there is no god save God, the One, the Vanquishing,

⁶⁶ “Lord of the Heavens and the Earth and what is between them,¹ the Exalted in Might, the Forgiver.”

⁶⁷ Say thou: “It is a tremendous report

⁶⁸ “From which you turn away.

⁶⁹ “I had no knowledge of the exalted assembly¹ when they disputed,

⁷⁰ “It is only revealed¹ to me, that I am a clear warner.”²

⁷¹ When thy Lord said to the angels: “I am creating a mortal from clay,

⁷² “And when I have formed him, and breathed into him of My Spirit, then fall down,¹ to him in submission.”²

⁷³ Then the angels submitted,¹ all of them together.

⁷⁴ Not so¹ Iblīs; he had waxed proud, and was of the false claimers of guidance.²

⁷⁵ He said: “O Iblīs: what hindered thee from submitting¹ to that which I have created with My hands? Hast thou waxed proud? Or art thou of the exalted?”

⁷⁶ Said he: “I am better than he;¹ Thou createdst me of fire, and Thou createdst him of clay.”

⁷⁷ He said: “Go thou forth from it; for thou art accursed;

⁷⁸ “And upon thee is My curse until the Day of Judgment.”¹

⁷⁹ Said he: “My Lord: grant Thou me respite until the day they are raised.”

⁸⁰ He said: “Thou art of those granted respite

⁸¹ “Until the day of the known time.”

⁸² Said he: “Then by Thy power and glory¹ will I cause them to err all together,

⁸³ “Save Thy servants among them that are sincere.”

⁸⁴ He said: “Then the truth:¹ — and the truth² do I say —

⁸⁵ “I will fill Gehenna with thee, and whoso follows thee of them all together!”

⁸⁶ Say thou: “I ask of you for it no reward; and I am not of those who claim things falsely.¹

⁸⁷ “It is only a reminder¹ to all mankind,

⁸⁸ “And you will come to know its report after a time.”
