In the name of God, the Almighty,¹ the Merciful.

¹ By the mount!¹

² By a Writ¹ inscribed

³ In a parchment unrolled!

⁴ By the house inhabited!¹

⁵ By the roof raised!

⁶ By the sea filled!¹

⁷ The punishment of thy Lord will befall;

⁸ There is none to avert it.

⁹ The day the heaven shakes, reeling,¹

¹⁰ And the mountains move, passing away:¹

¹¹ Woe, that day, to the deniers¹

¹² — Who in vain discourse¹ are playing —

¹³ The day they are shoved, with violence,¹ into the fire of Gehenna!

¹⁴ “This is the Fire which you denied:

¹⁵ “Is this sorcery?¹ Or do you not see?

¹⁶ “Burn therein! And be you patient or be you not patient — it is the same for you; you are but being rewarded for what you did.”

¹⁷ Those of prudent fear¹ will be in gardens and bliss,

¹⁸ Glad¹ at what their Lord has given them: — and their Lord protected them from the punishment of Hell —

¹⁹ “Eat and drink with satisfaction for what you did!”

²⁰ They will recline upon couches¹ arranged in rows; and We will marry them to pure, lustrous-eyed maidens,²

²¹ (And those who heed warning¹ and whose progeny follow them in faith: We will join them with their progeny; and We will not defraud them anything of their deeds; every man is responsible² for what he earned.)

²² And We will supply them with fruit and flesh such as they desire.

²³ They will pass from one to another¹ a cup wherein is neither vain speech, nor cause of sin,

²⁴ And there will circulate¹ among them youths of their own,² like hidden³ pearls.

²⁵ And they will draw near to one another, asking of one another: —

²⁶ They will say: “We were before, among our families, apprehensive,

²⁷ “But God was gracious to us, and protected us from the punishment of the scorching wind.

²⁸ “We called upon Him before; He is the Virtuous, the Merciful.”

²⁹ So remind thou! And by the favour of thy Lord thou art neither a soothsayer nor possessed.

³⁰ If¹ they say: “A poet — we will wait for the vicissitudes² of Fate for him,”³

³¹ Say thou: “Wait — I am with you among those waiting.”

³² If¹ their reason² commands them this:³ or if⁴ they are a people transgressing all bounds:⁵

³³ Or if¹ they say: “He has invented it,”² — the truth is,³ they do not believe.⁴

³⁴ Then let them produce a narrative¹ the like thereof, if they be truthful.²

³⁵ If¹ they were created from nothing:² or if³ they were the creators:⁴

³⁶ Or if¹ they created the heavens and the earth:² — the truth is,³ they are not certain.⁴

³⁷ If¹ the treasuries of thy Lord are with them:² or if³ they are the overseers:⁴

³⁸ Or if¹ they have a stairway on which they can listen in:² — then let their listener come with a clear authority.³

³⁹ If¹ He has daughters when you have sons:²

⁴⁰ Or if¹ thou askest of them a reward:² — then are they burdened by debt.³

⁴¹ If¹ they have the Unseen:² then are they writing.³

⁴² Or if¹ they intend a plan:² then are those who ignore warning³ those caught in a plan.⁴

⁴³ If¹ they have a god other than God:² — (Glory³ be to God above that to which they ascribe a partnership!⁴

⁴⁴ And were they to see pieces of the sky falling, they would say: “Clouds heaped up.”¹)

⁴⁵ Then leave thou them until they meet their day wherein they will be thunderstruck,¹

⁴⁶ A day in which their plan will avail them nothing, and they will not be helped.¹

⁴⁷ And for those who do wrong is a punishment besides that, but most of them know not.

⁴⁸ And be thou patient for the judgment of thy Lord, for thou art before Our eyes. And give thou glory¹ with the praise of thy Lord when thou arisest,

⁴⁹ And some of the night glorify¹ thou Him, and at the retreat of the stars.
