In the name of God, the Almighty,¹ the Merciful.

¹ When the Event befalls,¹

² — There is no denying its befalling —

³ Abasing, exalting;

⁴ When the earth is shaken with convulsion,¹

⁵ And the mountains crumble away¹

⁶ And are dust dispersing,

⁷ And you will be three kinds:¹

⁸ The companions of the right! — what of the companions of the right? —

⁹ And the companions of the left! — what of the companions of the left? —

¹⁰ And the foremost! The foremost:

¹¹ Those are they brought near,¹

¹² In the Gardens of Bliss,

¹³ (A multitude of the former peoples,

¹⁴ And a few of the latter)

¹⁵ On jewel-woven¹ couches,²

¹⁶ Reclining upon them, facing one another.

¹⁷ Circulating¹ among them are youths² made eternal

¹⁸ With cups, and jugs, and a glass from a running spring,

¹⁹ Wherefrom they have no headache, nor are they intoxicated;

²⁰ And such fruit as they choose,

²¹ And such flesh of fowl as they desire,

²² And pure, lustrous-eyed maidens,¹

²³ As the likeness of hidden¹ pearls

²⁴ As reward for what they did.

²⁵ They hear therein neither vain speech, nor cause of sin,

²⁶ Only the saying: “Peace! Peace!”

²⁷ And the companions of the right! — what of the companions on the right? —

²⁸ Among thornless lote trees,

²⁹ And acacias layered,

³⁰ And shade extended,

³¹ And water poured forth,

³² And fruit abounding,

³³ Unfailing, unforbidden,

³⁴ And couches raised high.

³⁵ We have produced them¹ in a new creation²

³⁶ And made them virgins,

³⁷ Devoted,¹ well-matched,²

³⁸ For the companions of the right:

³⁹ A multitude of the former peoples,

⁴⁰ And a multitude of the latter.

⁴¹ And the companions of the left! What of the companions of the left?

⁴² In scorching wind and scalding water,

⁴³ And a shadow of black smoke,

⁴⁴ Neither cool nor noble.¹

⁴⁵ They were, before that, opulent,

⁴⁶ And persisted in the Great Perjury,¹

⁴⁷ And said: “When we are dead and are dust and bones, will we be raised,

⁴⁸ “Or our fathers of former times?”

⁴⁹ Say thou: “The former peoples and the latter

⁵⁰ “Will be gathered together at the appointed time of a known day.”¹

⁵¹ Then you, O you, the straying¹ and the denying,

⁵² You will eat of a tree of Zaqqūm,¹

⁵³ And fill your bellies therewith,

⁵⁴ And drink on top of that of the scalding water,

⁵⁵ And drink as the thirst-wracked camels drink.

⁵⁶ This is their welcome on the Day of Judgment.¹

⁵⁷ We created you. Oh, that you but¹ gave credence!

⁵⁸ Have you considered what you emit?¹

⁵⁹ Did you create it or are We the creators?

⁶⁰ We have decreed death among you; and We will not be outrun,

⁶¹ That We will change your likenesses, and produce you in¹ what you know not.

⁶² And you have known the former¹ creation. Oh, that you but² took heed!

⁶³ Have you considered that which you sow?¹

⁶⁴ Is it you who cause it to grow or are We the growers?

⁶⁵ If We willed, We could make it debris, and you would remain bitterly jesting:¹

⁶⁶ “We are debt-laden!

⁶⁷ “Nay,¹ we have been deprived!”

⁶⁸ Have you considered the water which you drink?

⁶⁹ Is it you who sent it down from the rain clouds or are We the senders?

⁷⁰ If We willed, We could make it bitter. Oh, that you were but¹ grateful!

⁷¹ Have you considered the fire which you light?

⁷² Did you produce the tree thereof or were We the producers?

⁷³ We made it¹ a reminder, and a benefit for the desert-travellers.²

⁷⁴ So give thou glory¹ with the name of thy Lord, the Great!²

⁷⁵ Then I swear by the setting¹ of the stars:²

⁷⁶ — And it is a tremendous oath, if you but knew —

⁷⁷ It is a noble recitation¹

⁷⁸ In a hidden Writ,¹

⁷⁹ — None will touch it save those purified¹—

⁸⁰ A revelation¹ from the Lord of All Creation!

⁸¹ Is it then this narration¹ you disdain

⁸² And make denial thereof your livelihood?¹

⁸³ Oh, that when it¹ reaches the throat[...]!²

⁸⁴ But you at that time will look on.

⁸⁵ And We were nearer to it¹ than you, but you saw not.

⁸⁶ Oh, that — if you are to be without recompense¹ —

⁸⁷ You but¹ sent it² back, if you be truthful!³

⁸⁸ Then if he be¹ of those brought near:²

⁸⁹ Then rest,¹ and plenty,² and a garden of bliss.

⁹⁰ And if he be of the companions of the right:

⁹¹ “Peace for thee, among the companions of the right!”

⁹² And if he be of the denying and the straying:¹

⁹³ A welcome of scalding water,

⁹⁴ And burning in Hell.

⁹⁵ This is the truth¹ of certainty.

⁹⁶ So give thou glory¹ with the name of thy Lord, the Great!
