In the name of God, the Almighty,¹ the Merciful.

¹ He frowned and turned away

² That the blind man came to him.

³ And what can make thee know¹ — he might purify himself,

⁴ Or take heed, and the reminder benefit him?

⁵ As for him who is self-sufficient:¹

⁶ To him thou attendest,

⁷ But not upon thee¹ is it if he does not purify himself.

⁸ And as for him who comes to thee, striving¹

⁹ And in fear:¹

¹⁰ From him thou art distracted.

¹¹ No, indeed!¹ It is a reminder,

¹² So whoso wills might remember it,

¹³ In honoured pages,¹

¹⁴ Exalted and purified,

¹⁵ By the hands of scribes

¹⁶ Noble and virtuous.

¹⁷ Damned be¹ man! How denying² he is!

¹⁸ From what did He create him?

¹⁹ From a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him;

²⁰ Then He made the path easy for him;

²¹ Then He gives him death and buries him;

²² Then, when He wills, He resurrects him.

²³ No, indeed!¹ He² has not accomplished what He commanded him.

²⁴ So let man look at his food: —

²⁵ That We poured water in showers;¹

²⁶ Then We split the earth in cracks,¹

²⁷ And We caused to grow therein grain,

²⁸ And grapes, and herbage,

²⁹ And olives, and date-palms,

³⁰ And gardens dense with foliage,

³¹ And fruits, and grass,

³² As enjoyment for you and your cattle.

³³ Then when there comes the Blast:¹

³⁴ The day a man will flee from his brother,

³⁵ And his mother, and his father,

³⁶ And his consort, and his sons,

³⁷ Every man of them, that day, will have an involvement to suffice him.

³⁸ Faces, that day, will be bright,

³⁹ Laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings.

⁴⁰ And faces, that day, upon them will be dust,

⁴¹ Blackness¹ will cover them;

⁴² It is they who are the deniers, the immoral.
