In the name of God, the Almighty,¹ the Merciful.

¹ When the sun is wrapped up,¹

² And when the stars fall,¹

³ And when the mountains are set in motion,

⁴ And when the full-term she-camels¹ are neglected,

⁵ And when the wild beasts are gathered,

⁶ And when the seas are made to overflow,¹

⁷ And when the souls are coupled,¹

⁸ And when the infant girl buried alive¹ is asked

⁹ For what transgression¹ she was killed,

¹⁰ And when the pages are spread,

¹¹ And when the sky is pulled away,

¹² And when Hell is set ablaze,

¹³ And when the Garden is brought near: —

¹⁴ A soul will know what it has brought.

¹⁵ Then do I swear by those retreating:

¹⁶ The ships¹ withdrawing from view!²

¹⁷ And the night when it darkens!¹

¹⁸ And the dawn when it breathes!¹

¹⁹ It is the word¹ of a noble messenger,²

²⁰ Possessor of power, with the Lord of the Throne secure,

²¹ Obeyed there, and trustworthy.

²² And your companion is not possessed;

²³ And he saw him¹ on the clear horizon;²

²⁴ And he is not niggardly of the Unseen.

²⁵ And it is not the word¹ of an accursed² satan³

²⁶ — So whither are you going? —

²⁷ It is only a reminder¹ to all mankind,

²⁸ For whom among you wills to take a straight path.

²⁹ And you will not save that God wills, the Lord of All Creation.
