In the name of God, the Almighty,¹ the Merciful.

¹ Recite thou in the name of thy Lord who created,¹

² Created man from a clinging thing.¹

³ Recite thou, and thy Lord is the Most Noble,¹

⁴ Who taught by the pen,

⁵ Taught man what he knew not.

⁶ No, indeed!¹ Man transgresses,

⁷ That he considers himself self-sufficient.

⁸ To thy Lord is the return.

⁹ Hast thou seen¹ him who forbids

¹⁰ A servant when he performs the duty?¹

¹¹ Hast thou considered¹ if he is upon guidance,

¹² Or enjoins prudent fear?¹

¹³ Hast thou considered¹ if he denies and turns away?²

¹⁴ Knows he not that God sees?

¹⁵ No, indeed!¹ If he cease not, We will drag him by the forelock,

¹⁶ The lying, offending¹ forelock.

¹⁷ Then let him call his council.

¹⁸ We will call the guards of Hell.¹

¹⁹ No, indeed!¹ Obey thou not him, but submit² thou, and draw thou near.
